Now an HTML5 Facebook Game to take on Flash Farmville

April 16, 2011 @ 4 Comments

Well, this was expected. It was coming. It was attempted before. But, not really successful. Now Resortico is coming up with a new game. It is a Facebook Application. It is an HTML5 application. Right now only a video teaser is available at Resortico.com, with a tag line build a resort of your dreams.

HTML5 means this game will just work on iPad, unlike Farmville for which Zynga had to create an iOS application. I have only once concern though, how will the performance vary across different browsers. For example, will be more suitable to play on Internet Explorer because of it’s focus on Graphics acceleration, or will be more suitable to play on Chrome, because of fast Javascript execution. Well we will get to know soon. Right now just watch a flash video below to get excited about building resorts, if you are into that sort of thing or just be happy to see HTML5 take off in a big way for Games.

HTML5 is the “new technology”. Why does it then look so simple and no fancy stuff at all. Flash have done this 10 years ago so give me one reason to get excited about this.

Because this is accessible to anyone with a current-generation browser – including those on phones and tablets that either don’t have Flash, or can’t play Flash apps/games at an acceptable performance level. HTML5 opens up the possible market in a big way.

I thought accessibility was about to reach as many as possible. More than half of internet users use IE which doesn’t support Canvas. Another problem is the speed of HTML5 in mobile devices. Common people doesn’t care about openness or technology details, they just want to get a good experience.

You say that, You are probably true about current state of HTML 5. But it is an attempt, to give browsers power, to display rich content and animation without any third party addons like flash. So despite the young age of HTML 5, the examples are astounishing.

If you have doubts for HTML5, then google for webgl, and check it out some of examples, and see that HTML 5 & webgl supported Graphics Card accellerated 3D&2D graphics long before adobe tried to support withflash player version 11.

Additionally, using de facto IE domination in browser market, is not helping your argument, since IE is the richest source of problems in the cross browser compatiblity area since all the time. IE itself a problem to todays internet world. Nowadays many and many people quit using IE and switch to a more agile and standarts compilant browsers like firefox or chrome. So using a problematic argument to support an other problamatic argument is not helping at all.

Sooner or later, HTML5 will be the standart in all browsers and performance issues will be overcame and tools to create rich content will be much more. Keeping other aspects of HTML5 such as client storage, easy embedding of audio and video, the new internet era will consist of HTML5 powered products.
